This dissertation considers the issues of the translation process before the dubbing of English-spoken movies. The works defends the need for a pragmatic approach. The first chapter is devoted to the description of the technical process of dubbing. It is written on the basis of direct contacts with some business operators (a relevant interview with a dubbing director is included in an annex). The second chapter gives an historical overview of dubbing. The third chapter offers a summary of previous research and sets film translation in the framework of general translation. The fourth chapter contains a sample comparison between the original and the dubbed version of "Crimes and Misdemeanors" by Woody Allen (1989).
The bibliography collects data for all texts regarding dubbing at the closing date (April 1996) limited to the languages taken into account: Italian, English, German and French.
