Lingua Geral is an extinct lingua franca, based on Tupi (an indigenous language of the Amerindian family). Lingua Geral was spoken by Portuguese colonists and Jesuits in the first stages of Brazilian colonization, along the north Brazilian coast. After it came to be used also by black slaves coming from African colonies and other Indian groups.
